Business Korean is the Korean you use at work: the right title for each colleague, a speech level that fits the room, and short, clear updates. Grammar and vocabulary matter, but these three decide how your message lands.
A team leader asks for a status update. You have the facts, but your first Korean sentence is too casual for the room. In a Korean workplace, good language is not only the right noun for a shipment or design. You need a clear message and a speech level that fits the relationship.
You will use official trade data to show the scale, then move to the workday: who speaks first, what to call a manager, and how to check a date without sounding abrupt. You will also separate language goals from immigration rules. A visa category and a language exam are not the same thing.
Why Korean matters at work
Korea's export economy touches manufacturing, engineering, logistics, software and sales. The government data also records major trade in ships, cosmetics and bio-health products [1]. Big employers such as Samsung, Hyundai and LG sit in different parts of this landscape, but their job requirements vary by team. A global office can use English for some meetings and Korean for local coordination. You should look at the actual role and ask which language is used with customers, colleagues and managers.

The export numbers do not give you a salary premium for speaking Korean. You could not verify a general one that would apply worldwide. The value of Korean in a role is more direct: a manager can hear your status without an extra translation step; a supplier can explain a problem in their usual language; a colleague can tell you about an issue before it becomes a missed deadline.
Foreign professionals also work under different visa routes, and each one sets its own rules. Some count Korean ability, others do not. Treat a language exam and a visa category as separate questions, and check the current rule for your route with the Korea Immigration Service and your employer.
The Korean office situations to learn
| Situation | What matters | Practice target |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting a manager | title and respectful ending | short introduction and thanks |
| Status meeting | facts first, then the next action | progress, problem, owner, date |
| Design review | describe the issue without guessing | measurements and clarification |
| Supplier call | confirm a delivery and who approved it | dates, quantities, written recap |
| Team chat | reply promptly with the right tone | acknowledgement and follow-up |
| Customer visit | welcome and guide a guest | directions, schedule and polite offer |
Titles matter. A manager may be addressed as 부장님 (bujangnim) when that is their actual title, rather than by given name. You should not assign a title by appearance. Ask a colleague how the person is addressed, and use the name or title the workplace uses. A company can be formal in a meeting and more relaxed in a small team chat, so listen before copying a casual phrase.
Korean has several speech styles. The polite formal 합니다체 works well for reports, presentations and first formal contact. 해요체 is polite and common in everyday conversation with colleagues. Both are different from intimate casual speech. You can learn the same work message in each style and choose deliberately. A sentence with the right facts but the wrong ending can change how it is received.
Hierarchy affects turn-taking, but it should not stop you from clarifying a safety or quality issue. A respectful question is better than silent uncertainty. You can say what you understood, name the part you need checked, and ask for a written confirmation. If a specification or legal term is critical, use a qualified reviewer.
On day four we ran a mock design review. The tutor played a department manager and asked whether a sample had passed inspection. We answered 확인 후 다시 보고드리겠습니다 instead of pretending the result was ready. Then we practised returning with the actual status and next step. The difficult part was reporting uncertainty without sounding evasive.
Business Korean phrases
Each Korean phrase below includes a romanisation and the speech level. Romanisation helps you start speaking, but Hangul should become the main reading system. These are polite examples for contemporary work. Check titles with the team and keep names out of practice material unless you have permission.
| Situation | Korean and romanisation | English and speech level |
|---|---|---|
| Formal greeting | 안녕하십니까. 영업팀 김민수입니다. Annyeonghasimnikka. Yeongeop tim Gim Minsu-imnida. | Hello. I am Kim Minsu from sales. 합니다체. |
| Greeting a manager | 부장님, 잠시 말씀드려도 되겠습니까? Bujangnim, jamsi malsseumdeuryeodo doegesseumnikka? | Manager, may I speak with you briefly? 합니다체. |
| Status update | 현재 검토 중입니다. 오늘 오후에 결과를 공유하겠습니다. Hyeonjae geomto jung-imnida. Oneul ohu-e gyeolgwareul gongyuhagetseumnida. | It is under review. I will share the result this afternoon. 합니다체. |
| Checking a date | 납기일을 다시 확인해 주시겠습니까? Napgiireul dasi hwaginhae jusigesseumnikka? | Could you confirm the delivery date again? 합니다체. |
| Asking for a file | 최신 파일을 보내 주실 수 있을까요? Choesin paireul bonae jusil su isseulkkayo? | Could you send the latest file? 해요체. |
| Naming an issue | 도면과 실제 치수가 다릅니다. Domyeongwa silje chisuga dareumnida. | The actual dimension differs from the drawing. 합니다체. |
| Reporting uncertainty | 확인 후 다시 보고드리겠습니다. Hwag-in hu dasi bogodeurigetseumnida. | I will check and report back. 합니다체. |
| Thanking a colleague | 도와주셔서 감사합니다. Dowajusyeoseo gamsahamnida. | Thank you for your help. 합니다체. |

| Ending a meeting or the day | 수고하셨습니다. Sugohasyeotseumnida. | Thank you for your hard work. 합니다체, common between colleagues. |
You should practise the response as well as the opening line. If someone says the date has changed, repeat the new date. If a manager asks a yes-or-no question and you do not know, say you will check and then actually return. A polite ending cannot repair an inaccurate report. Keep sentences short enough to say naturally under pressure.
How much Korean do you need
CEFR targets here are your work-planning estimates. TOPIK is Korea's official proficiency test for non-native speakers. The government's Study in Korea page lists employment and hiring criteria and visa applications among uses of TOPIK scores [2]. It does not establish one TOPIK level for every job. You should read the current advert and the exact visa guidance before treating a score as mandatory.
| Work task | Suggested CEFR level | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Greetings and basic office exchange | A2 | short polite conversation in Hangul |
| Routine updates and scheduling | B1 | live role play and a written recap |
| Detailed discussions and client work | B2 | TOPIK evidence if requested plus spoken assessment [2] |
| Complex negotiation or specialist drafting | C1 | advanced proficiency and expert review |
TOPIK I assesses listening and reading; TOPIK II adds writing, while a separate speaking test is also available [2]. That matters for work. A strong reading score alone will not show that you can explain a defect aloud. A hiring team may ask for TOPIK and still run an interview. For a role abroad that uses Korean only occasionally, the employer may prefer practical performance to a certificate.
Visa routes are a separate question. Some count Korean ability and others do not, and the rules change. You should never assume that a level mentioned in a general blog applies to a particular visa or profession. Use this table to plan language practice, then verify the current rule for your exact route.
A practice plan for office Korean
- Start with people and roles. Learn Hangul, names, team titles and the difference between 합니다체 and 해요체. Ask a trusted colleague how managers are addressed in this workplace.
- Build short updates. Say what is done, what is delayed and what comes next. Practise the same update in a formal meeting and a polite team conversation. Listen to the reply and repeat the key date.
- Add your work materials. Use a safe sample agenda, drawing note or shipment message. Read it aloud, ask a clarification question and write a brief recap. Review the specialist terms with someone in the field.
- Rehearse the hard moment. A sample fails, a client changes a requirement or a deadline moves. Practise reporting it to a manager and following up once the facts are checked.
Short practice on most workdays, since learning Korean takes time, is more useful than memorising a long list before an interview. Titles and speech levels matter in Japanese workplaces and in business Chinese too, so the habit carries over if your work spans the region. Keep the phrases you actually need and replace those you do not use. Once you can give a routine update without a script, make the listener less predictable.
Tools that help
The official TOPIK site provides test information and practice material through the government Study in Korea page [2]. The Online King Sejong Institute offers free Korean courses. A tutor who knows Korean workplaces can check honorifics, titles and whether your update sounds natural after practising with apps to learn Korean. Use a specialist colleague for technical accuracy as well as language tone.
Tell Slova what you want from Korean: a new role, a move or family connection, or a passion for football or television. It builds your path around those interests and the manager updates, design reviews and supplier calls your job brings. You do every lesson out loud with our AI tutors, who play a department manager, teammate or partner waiting for a revised date. One list keeps every word you meet, including titles and endings worth practising again.
Conclusion
Business Korean starts with respect and accuracy. The export data shows the size of Korea's international work, while the useful language is often a short status, a precise question or a careful report of uncertainty. Learn the office's titles, practise formal and everyday polite speech, and check the real exam or visa requirement for your own role. The best result is a colleague who knows exactly what happens next.
Frequently asked questions
What TOPIK level do you need to work in Korea?
There is no one level for every role. TOPIK can be used in hiring and visa applications, but the employer and the exact immigration route set the requirement [2].
Is TOPIK enough for business Korean?
It is useful evidence of language ability, but work also needs spoken updates, listening, titles and the right speech level. Practise a real role play alongside exam study.
Should you use 합니다체 or 해요체 at work?
Use 합니다체 for formal reports and first formal contact. 해요체 is polite in many everyday colleague conversations. Follow the norms of the particular team.
How do you address a Korean manager?
Use the person's actual workplace title with 님 when that is how the team addresses them, such as 부장님 for a department manager. Ask a colleague if unsure.
