Talkpal Review 2026: Is It Worth It for Speaking Practice?

Talkpal gives you an AI conversation partner in more languages than almost any app, with a real free allowance. It is a place to practise talking, not a full course.

Talkpal is worth it if you already know some of your language and need a patient partner to talk with every day. The free plan gives you ten minutes of chat a day, which is enough to test it properly. Premium is worth paying for only if you keep hitting that limit, because Talkpal is a conversation tool, not a course that teaches you from zero.

TL;DRTalkpal is an AI chat and voice partner with roleplays, debates, calls and word drills in 130+ languages. The free Basic plan allows ten minutes a day. Premium, about 20 dollars a month or 120 a year on the US App Store, removes the limit and opens every mode. It is great for getting words out of your mouth. Voices sound synthetic, and corrections and pronunciation scores are not always right.

People usually find Talkpal when they realise they can read and understand a language but cannot answer out loud. We used Talkpal on the free plan and then on Premium in 2026, in Italian and Spanish, and read recent independent reviews and store comments. This page covers what a session is like, how much it helps, and whether the paid plan is worth it.

What you get

Talkpal is a set of conversation modes built on GPT-style AI. You pick a language and a mode, then talk or type. Chat Mode is open conversation with a tutor. Call Mode is voice only. Roleplays drop you into a scene like a hotel or a job interview. Characters let you chat with famous figures, Debates make you argue a side, and Word, Sentence and Dialogue modes drill smaller pieces. Photo Mode asks you to describe a picture [2]. After you speak, you can see a transcript with corrections and a pronunciation score.

The best thing about it is how low the pressure is. On day two, on the sofa late in the evening, we opened a hotel roleplay in Italian and said Ho una prenotazione a nome di Rossi. The receptionist answered at once, asked for a passport, and we kept going for eight minutes without the fear of a real person waiting. The voice sounded flat and a little robotic, but it did not matter much. We were talking.

How far you can get

Talkpal helps most between A2 and B2. At that stage you know enough words to hold a simple exchange, and what you lack is practice pulling them out fast. Daily chats build exactly that. Talkpal groups content by CEFR level for its major languages, like Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic, and less common languages get only the free-form modes [4].

What it will not do is teach you a language from nothing. There is no step-by-step grammar course, no clear finish line, and no built-in review of the words you struggled with [4]. Lower-level learners often feel lost after the first few chats, with no guidance on what to work on next [5]. Think of Talkpal as the practice room next to a course, not the course itself.

Our 7-day test

Our goal: on day 7, check into a hotel in Italian, ask about breakfast and ask for a late check-out, out loud and without reading. We had about A2 Italian. We used the free plan for three days, then Premium.

  1. Day 1. Free plan, Chat Mode. Ten minutes went fast. We practised Ho una prenotazione a nome di Rossi and A che ora è la colazione?
  2. Day 2. Hotel roleplay in the evening. The receptionist was patient. The transcript showed colazione marked as unclear even though it sounded fine to us.
  3. Day 3. The free minutes ran out mid-roleplay, just as we tried the late check-out question. Frustrating, but it showed us what we needed to practise.
  4. Day 4. Started Premium. Forty minutes of roleplays in one go. Corrections were light while the AI stayed in character, so we asked for them directly at the end.
  5. Day 5 and 6. Call Mode on the walk home. We drilled È possibile fare il check-out più tardi? until it came out in one breath.
  6. Day 7. The full scene out loud with a friend playing the receptionist. Booking, breakfast and late check-out all worked. We stumbled when the friend answered with a price and a time we did not expect.

The unlimited minutes were what made the difference: repeating a scene five times in one evening is where confidence came from. The pronunciation score was not something we trusted, and we had to ask for corrections to get them. Each day took 10 minutes on free and 25 to 40 minutes on Premium.

Where it falls short

  • No real course. There is no guided path from A1 to B2, and grammar only comes up when you make a mistake [4].
  • Corrections are light. In roleplays the AI often stays in character and lets errors pass unless you ask [5].
  • Pronunciation scores can mislead. Reviewers found the speech recognition sometimes guesses the word you meant, so a wrong sound can be marked as fine [4][6].
  • Synthetic voices. Clear, but flat. You do not get used to real speed and rhythm.
  • Words disappear. There is no spaced review of the words from your chats, so new vocabulary is easy to lose [4].

Prices are from the US App Store in September 2026 [2]. On its website Talkpal sells one, 12 and 24 month plans with a 14-day free trial, and some reviewers saw lower monthly prices there [1][4]. Prices vary by country, so check your own checkout and the renewal date.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

More learners. Talkpal passed 6 million learners in 180 countries in November 2025 [7]. Its pricing page now claims more than 10 million users [1].

More modes. The App Store listing now includes Photo Mode and personalised AI-generated courses next to the older chat, call, roleplay and debate modes [2].

Structure for big languages. Reviews in 2026 describe CEFR-level content in major languages like Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic, while smaller languages still offer only free-form practice [4].

What learners are saying

Ratings are good but not glowing: 4.7 on the App Store from about 3,700 ratings and 4.5 on Google Play from about 107,000 reviews [2][3]. Its Trustpilot score was 4.3 in December 2025 [7].

People praise the variety of modes, the low-pressure feel, and the price compared with a human tutor. Learners of less common languages are especially grateful, because few AI apps cover them at all. Many say the free ten minutes turned into a real daily habit.

The complaints repeat across reviews. Voices sound robotic. Pronunciation feedback is hit and miss, and reviewers found it can miss real mistakes or flag words that were fine [4][6]. Some report audio bugs where they could not play back a phrase [5]. Intermediate learners say the chats start to feel the same after a few weeks, and lower-level learners say they feel lost without guidance on what to work on.

Is Talkpal worth it?

Yes, if you are around A2 to B2 and your problem is speaking. For that, a patient partner you can open at any hour is worth a lot, and the free plan lets you check it before paying anything.

Premium is worth it if you use your ten minutes every day and keep running out. Try one month before a year.

Not the right pick if you are a true beginner, you need reliable pronunciation feedback, or you want a structured course. Our list of beginner-friendly language apps is a better starting point, and our Talkpal vs Praktika comparison shows what an app with a daily lesson plan looks like.

How to get more from it

  • Pick one scene and repeat it. Five runs of the same roleplay teach more than five different chats.
  • Ask for corrections at the end. Type "correct my last five messages" so errors do not slip past.
  • Keep your own word list. Write down every word you had to look up, since the app will not bring it back.
  • Check big claims. If a grammar note or a score looks odd, check it with a teacher or a grammar site.

Where Slova fits

If you like talking with an AI but want a plan behind it, Slova is worth a look. It builds a full course around your goal, like a job, a move abroad or something you love such as anime or football, and every lesson can be done out loud with our AI tutors. Every word from your lessons and conversations goes into one list that brings it back for review.

Conclusion

Talkpal is one of the easiest ways to start speaking a language you already partly know, in almost any language, with a free daily allowance that is actually useful. It is weaker as a teacher: the voices are synthetic, corrections need asking for, and there is no path or review behind the chats. Use it as a practice room next to a real course. If it does not fit, our list of Talkpal alternatives by what they fix and the wider guide to AI conversation apps are good next reads.

Frequently asked questions

Is Talkpal free?

Yes. The Basic plan is free for good and gives you ten minutes of practice a day, with basic chat, pronunciation assessment and progress tracking. Premium removes the limit.

How much does Talkpal Premium cost?

On the US App Store, about 20 dollars for one month, 50 for three months or 120 for a year. The website sells its own plans with a 14-day free trial. Prices vary by country.

Is Talkpal good for beginners?

Not on its own. It has no step-by-step course, so beginners do better learning basic words and grammar first and using Talkpal to practise them.

Is Talkpal's pronunciation feedback accurate?

Not always. Reviewers found it can miss real mistakes because the speech recognition guesses what you meant. Use it as a rough guide and check important sounds with a teacher or a native speaker.
