Loora is better than Duolingo for speaking English, and Duolingo is better for everything else: free access, 40+ languages and a daily habit. If you want to talk about your job in English for 15 minutes a day, choose Loora. If you are learning any other language, or want to start for free, choose Duolingo.
Two apps, two different jobs. That is why this comparison is less about which is "better" and more about which problem you have. Below we cover speaking, price, level and who each one is for, then a short picker to settle it.

How they compare where it counts
We scored both apps out of 10 after using each one on a paid plan. The gap is wide in both directions, which is the point: they are not really competitors for the same learner.

How we tested
We used Duolingo Super and Loora's paid plan on iPhone for several weeks. In both we did the same three things: the first session, a week of daily use, and a few free conversations on topics we picked. We then read recent store reviews, Loora's Trustpilot page and the company's own update notes, and checked prices in the US App Store in September 2026 [1][3][5][6].
Prices differ by country and by offer. Treat the numbers here as a guide, and check your own store before you pay.
Speaking: a side feature or the whole app
This is the real difference. In Duolingo you mostly tap, match and type. There are speaking exercises where you repeat a sentence, and there is Video Call, a short chat with the character Lily. In 2026 Duolingo has been moving Video Call from the dearer Max plan into Super, and new subscribers no longer see Max at all [7]. Rollout varies by account, so check that it appears for you before paying for it.
In Loora, speaking is everything. You open the app, pick a lesson or a scenario, and talk to an AI voice that answers, asks follow-ups and then shows you what to fix. Since March 2026 each lesson ends with one takeaway, a single correction turned into a short exercise [5].

We found the difference in the first week. After five days of Duolingo we could tap the right answer to almost anything, but a friend asking us a question out loud still made us pause. After five days of Loora we were making longer sentences, and the mistakes were now ones we could see, because they were written down after each talk.
Level: where each one breaks down
Duolingo is built for beginners. The first units teach the alphabet and the first hundred words, and it holds your hand. Its weak spot is the top end: big courses reach roughly the middle of the CEFR scale, and after that the taps stop feeling like progress.
Loora is the other way round. It has no beginner course, no alphabet and no grammar unit. Reviewers who tested it say it works best from about B1, and our own beginners struggled to fill a whole talk [8]. If you can already say a simple sentence about your day, it is a good fit. If you cannot, start somewhere else first.
There is one more thing to know about the feedback. On Trustpilot, users praise Loora's realistic talk and instant notes, and complain that the AI sometimes cuts them off mid-sentence and that corrections arrive after the conversation rather than during it [6].

Price and plans
Duolingo is free, and its paid Super plan removes ads and energy limits. Loora has no real free tier, only a trial. That single difference decides the choice for many people.
| Plan | Duolingo | Loora |
|---|---|---|
| Free option | Yes, with ads and energy limits | Free trial only |
| Monthly | About 10 dollars and up (Super) | 14.99 to 19.99 dollars |
| Every 3 months | Not a standard plan | 44.99 dollars |
| Yearly | Up to 119.99 dollars (Super) | 59.99 to 119.99 dollars |
| Trial | 14 days on Super | Free trial, length shown at checkout |
| Platforms | iPhone, Android, web | iPhone and Android |
Prices are the US App Store ranges checked in September 2026 [1][3]. Loora bills on its own after the trial, and a few Trustpilot reviewers say the renewal caught them by surprise [6]. Who should pick which
Pick Duolingo if you are learning Spanish, French, Japanese or any of its other languages, if you are a beginner, or if you want to start without paying. It is still the easiest way to make studying a habit.
Pick Loora if you are learning English, you are somewhere around intermediate, and your problem is that you rarely get to say long things out loud. It is a good fit if you have an interview or meetings in English coming up.
Use both if you are a lower-intermediate English learner: Duolingo on busy days to keep the routine, Loora when you have 15 minutes to talk.
Conclusion
Duolingo and Loora barely overlap. One builds a routine in dozens of languages for free, the other coaches your English speech for a monthly fee. Choose by your language first, your level second and your budget third, and the picker above will give the same answer we would.

Frequently asked questions
Is Loora better than Duolingo?
For speaking English, yes, and for speaking practice in general it is the one to pick. Duolingo has speaking exercises and short Video Calls, but most of the app is tapping. Loora is built around open voice conversation and feedback on what you said. Duolingo is better as a free way to learn, for beginners and for any language other than English.
Does Loora teach languages other than English?
No. Loora teaches English only. The app interface comes in other languages, but the course is English. Duolingo teaches 40+ languages.
Is Loora free like Duolingo?
No. Duolingo has a free plan. Loora offers a free trial and then charges, at about 15 to 20 dollars a month or 60 to 120 dollars a year in the US App Store.
Is Loora good for beginners?
Not really. It has no beginner course, and reviewers say it works best from about B1 level. Start with a structured app, then add Loora.
