25 questions that get harder step by step, like the Cambridge placement tests. At the end you see your level, a score for each skill and what to practise next.

  1. Start easy

Short, easy questions first, with pictures if you need them.

  2. Step up

Gaps, word meanings and short texts, a little harder every five questions.

  3. See your level

Your CEFR level, a score for each skill and how to reach the next level.

How we estimate your level

Every question has a level from A1 to C1. A level counts as passed when you get three of its questions right, and your result is the highest level you passed, counting up from A1. The questions are not yet calibrated on large groups of learners, so the result is an estimate, not a certificate.

English levels explained: CEFR A1 to C2

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes language ability in six steps, from A1 for beginners to C2 for near-native mastery. Here is what each one looks like in everyday life.

  1. A1

    Beginner

    • Introduce yourself and ask and answer simple questions.
    • Understand everyday words like prices, times and directions.
    • Read short, clear signs and messages.
  2. A2

    Pre-intermediate

    • Get through simple routine tasks: shopping and ordering food.
    • Talk about your family, your work and your day.
    • Understand short notices, messages and emails.
  3. B1

    Intermediate

    • Manage on a trip and in most everyday situations.
    • Follow the main points of clear talk on familiar topics.
    • Tell a story or explain a plan.
  4. B2

    Upper-intermediate

    • Talk with native speakers without much strain.
    • Follow news and films on familiar topics.
    • Argue a point of view and adjust your tone.
  5. C1

    Advanced

    • Use English flexibly at work and in study.
    • Understand long, demanding texts.
    • Catch what is meant but not said.
  6. C2

    Proficient

    • Understand almost everything with ease.
    • Express fine shades of meaning.
    • Telling C2 from C1 takes a longer exam than this one, so this test shows both as C1+.

How can I check my English level?

Take a short placement test that maps your answers to the CEFR scale, from A1 to C2. This free English level test asks 25 questions on grammar, vocabulary, reading and everyday English and shows your level, a score for each skill and what to practise next, free.

What is B2 level in English?

B2 is upper-intermediate on the CEFR scale. At B2 you can talk with native speakers without much strain, follow the news and films on familiar topics and argue a point of view. Many universities and employers ask for B2 as their minimum.

Is this English level test really free?

Yes, it is free. At the end you leave your email address to see your result, and we send you a copy, along with 50% off Slova when it launches. Your answers are marked in your browser; we keep only your email, your result and what you choose to tell us about your goals.

How long does the English level test take?

There are 25 short questions and most people finish in about 10 minutes. There is no timer, so take the time you need. You can go back to change an answer, and if you take a break, your place is kept in the same browser tab.

What does the test measure?

Grammar, vocabulary, short reading texts and everyday replies. It does not test speaking, listening or writing.

How does the test choose the questions?

Like the Cambridge English placement tests, the questions get harder step by step, from A1 at the start to C1 at the end. If several answers in a row are wrong or “I’m not sure”, the next questions come from an easier level instead, so nobody is stuck on questions far above them.

Which CEFR levels can the test show?

It places you from A1 to C1, and below A1 as Pre-A1. When your answers point to two levels it shows a range, such as A2–B1. A short test cannot tell C1 from C2, so both show as C1 and above.

Is the result an official English certificate?

No. It is an estimate from a short test, good for knowing where to start. For a job, a visa or a university, take an official exam such as Cambridge English, IELTS or TOEFL.

What if I do not know an answer?

Choose “I’m not sure” instead of guessing. It counts the same as a wrong answer, but a lucky guess sends you questions that are too hard and makes your result less accurate. Please skip the dictionary and the translator too.

Can I read the instructions in my own language?

Yes, if you choose one. The page and the questions stay in English, because English is what is tested. Under “Before you start”, pick one of ten languages, including Turkish, Arabic, German, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Thai and Vietnamese, and the tips before the test also appear in that language. The page never switches language by itself.
