ELSA Speak is worth it if your English is already decent and your accent is what holds you back. It scores every sound you say and shows you exactly how to fix it, which few apps do as well. If you are a beginner, or your real problem is finding words in a conversation, it is a weaker buy.

We used ELSA on a paid plan for several weeks in 2026, on iPhone and Android, and read this year's store reviews, Trustpilot pages and Reddit threads. This page answers one question: what do you really get for the money?
What you get
ELSA is a pronunciation coach first and an English course second. You read or repeat a short sentence, and the app scores each word and each sound inside it. Tap a red word and you see which sound went wrong, with a short tip and a short video of a mouth making the right sound. Most lessons take two or three minutes.

Since a redesign in January 2026, the app is built around four tabs: Coach, AI Chats, Discover and Progress [4]. The Coach suggests lessons from your level and goals. AI Chats holds the role plays, where you talk through a scene like booking a hotel room or a job interview and get feedback as you go. There are more than 8,000 lessons, plus coaches for interviews and presentations, and practice for tests like IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC [1].
On day six we did a lesson on the lunch break with the sentence I think the third option is better. ELSA marked think and third red four times in a row, each time for the same th sound. The tip to put the tongue between the teeth sounded obvious, but the fifth try went green, and for the rest of the week we heard ourselves saying th differently in real calls.
How to read your ELSA score
The colours are the whole idea of ELSA, so it helps to know what each one is telling you. Green means the sound was clear. Yellow (orange in the app) means it was close. Red means ELSA heard a different sound. Try it on the sentence below, which is the one from our screenshot.

How far you can get
ELSA is best for learners at about B1 and above on the European CEFR scale: people who can already hold a simple conversation but are hard to understand, or feel shy about their accent. For them, a few weeks of daily practice usually brings clearer vowels, better word stress and fewer repeated misunderstandings on calls.
It will not take you from zero to fluent. The lessons teach some vocabulary and grammar, and the new bilingual help makes the start easier for beginners, but the core is still the sound of English, not how to build sentences. Most reviewers suggest pairing it with a course or a conversation tool, and we agree [5]. Praktika is one such partner, with open conversations next to ELSA's sound drills.
Our 7-day test
Our goal: on day 7, give a one-minute job interview answer about our work, out loud, and have the Speech Analyzer mark most of it clear. We used Premium on a phone, about 15 minutes a day.
- Day 1. Took the short voice assessment. ELSA flagged th, the short i in ship and word stress. The first plan felt fair.
- Day 2. Two lessons on th. Three and thirty kept going yellow. Did it at home, because a quiet room made a clear difference to the scores.
- Day 3. Word stress. Learned that we said deVELopment right but PHOtograph and phoTOgraphy the same way.
- Day 4. First Interview Coach session: Tell me about yourself. The feedback on grammar and pace was useful, the follow-up questions a bit generic.
- Day 5 and 6. Lessons on the lunch break. Practised I've been working in logistics for three years until three and years stopped going red.
- Day 7. Recorded the full answer in the Speech Analyzer. Most words came back green. The weak spots were still th at speed and the ending of worked.
Our honest takeaway: after a week the sounds we drilled were clearer, and we noticed them in real calls. Finding the words under pressure did not get easier, because ELSA mostly trains how you say things, not what to say.
Where ELSA falls short
The free plan is a taster. You can take the assessment and try a limited set of lessons, but the AI features are capped, so it is hard to judge the app from free alone.
The plans are confusing. ELSA sells Pro and Premium, in monthly, three-month, yearly and lifetime versions, and the price changes with country, platform and offer [1][3]. The US App Store alone lists yearly plans from 71 to 130 dollars, while ELSA's own site lists a one-year Premium at 159.99 dollars [3][6]. Third-party reviews still quote Pro and Premium at 89.99 and 99.99 dollars a year, which shows how much the numbers drift [5].
The scoring is not perfect, as ELSA versus Speak makes clear. Some learners find it too strict with a clear accent, others find a wrong sound can pass. The default model is American English, although you can now pick other accents in some lessons [4].
The biggest limit is the one many buyers only notice later. Clear sounds help, but they do not give you things to say, which is why improving English speaking takes more than pronunciation drills. The AI role plays are good for short scenes, but ELSA is not built as a full course for learning to talk.

Prices were checked in September 2026 [1][3][6][7]. They vary by country and change with sales, and the same plan can cost more on the website than in the app. Paid plans start with a 7-day free trial that turns into a paid plan on its own, so set a reminder. Lifetime is not a shortcut: one Trustpilot reviewer says a lifetime plan left many sections locked, so check what it covers.
What changed in 2025 and 2026
A redesigned app (January 2026). The app moved to four tabs, with lessons suggested from your goals and interests, plus avatars and leaderboards. ELSA said paid plans and billing did not change [4].
More AI in the middle of the app. AI Chats now holds real-life role plays such as meetings and travel, with feedback as you go. Beginners can start with help in their own language, and you can pick accents such as American, British or Australian [4][6]. Unlimited role play and the AI coach sit in Premium [6].
Bigger numbers. ELSA's own site now says 92 million downloads [3].
What learners are saying
Store ratings are high: 4.8 on the App Store from about 113,000 ratings and 4.6 on Google Play from about a million reviews [1][2]. Most praise is about one thing. Learners say ELSA is the first app that showed them exactly which sound they get wrong, and many describe feeling more confident on work calls after a few weeks.
The complaints are mostly about money, not teaching. On Trustpilot the picture is much worse than in the stores: a TrustScore of 2.4 from only 32 reviews, with two thirds of them one star [8]. Most describe surprise charges after a trial, a full year billed without a clear warning, slow refunds or voice recognition errors. It is a small sample, but the pattern is the same as the App Store complaints.
On Reddit, the common view is balanced. People like the sound-by-sound feedback, find the scoring sometimes too strict or too forgiving, and say ELSA works best next to something that makes you talk.
Is ELSA Speak worth it?
ELSA is worth it if you are an intermediate or advanced English learner, you get asked to repeat yourself, and you can give it ten or fifteen minutes most days. For accent work, job interviews and speaking exams, it is one of the strongest apps there is. A discounted yearly plan is the sensible way to buy it, and compare the app price with the website first.
It is not worth it if you are a beginner, if you want a language other than English, or if your main problem is freezing in conversation. In those cases you will pay for a precise tool that fixes the wrong thing; ELSA Speak alternatives may fit better.
Tips before you pay
- Take the free assessment first. It shows which sounds ELSA would work on, which tells you if the app fits you.
- Practise somewhere quiet. Background noise makes the scores less reliable, especially on the bus.
- Check the price in your own store. Plans and discounts differ a lot between countries and between the app and the website.
- Set a reminder before the trial ends. Most complaints come from people who forgot the trial would renew.
Where Slova fits
If ELSA fixed your sounds but you still run out of things to say, Slova is worth a look. It builds English lessons around why you are learning, whether that is a new job, a move abroad or something you love like anime or football, and every lesson can be done out loud with our AI tutors. The words from everything you do stay in one list and come back for review.
Conclusion
ELSA Speak is a very good pronunciation coach and a limited language course. If your English is already solid and your accent is the problem, it is worth the money, especially on a discounted yearly plan. If you are starting out, or you need to learn to hold a conversation, it should be a second app, not your main one. Read the plan details carefully before the trial ends.
