Memrise vs Duolingo (2026): Which Helps You Understand More?

Memrise is better for hearing how people really talk and keeping useful phrases. Duolingo is better for a free, structured daily habit. Here is how they compare in 2026.

Pick Memrise if you want to understand real people, with clips of native speakers and phrases you will actually hear. Pick Duolingo if you want a free, structured course and a habit that gets you to open the app every day.

TL;DRMemrise is stronger at listening, real phrases and word review, and weaker at grammar, its free plan and trust after years of changes. Duolingo is stronger at habit, structure and its free plan, and weaker at real voices and open speaking. Memrise Pro runs about 43 to 62 dollars a year, Duolingo Super about 84 to 120. Choose by what you lack: an ear for real speech, or the habit of showing up.

Memrise's learner count is the company's own figure [1]. Duolingo daily active users from its Q2 2026 shareholder letter [7]. Store ratings (number of ratings) checked in September 2026 [1][2][5][6].

People who compare these two usually have one of two problems. Some have a long Duolingo streak and still cannot follow a real conversation. Others loved the old Memrise and want to know if the new one is still worth it.

We used both apps side by side, on their paid plans, and looked at what decides whether you will understand and use the language: how real the listening is, how much you speak, and whether words stay with you.

The short answer

Memrise

You want to understand how people really speak

Native-speaker videos, useful phrases and strong word review. Little grammar, a thin free plan.

Duolingo

You want a free, structured course and a daily habit

Short lessons, streaks and 40+ languages. Real voices and open speaking are the weak spots.

How they score

We scored each app out of 10 on the things that matter after the first month. Memrise wins on real listening, useful phrases and word review. Duolingo wins on habit, structure and the free plan.

How we tested

We used Memrise Pro and Duolingo Super on iPhone, Android and the web over several weeks in 2026, and did the same things in both: the first lesson, a week of daily sessions in Spanish, and the speaking features each app offers.

We also read recent App Store and Google Play reviews and checked each app's plans and prices in September 2026 [1][5]. Prices change by country, so treat the numbers below as a guide.

Our 7-day test

Our goal: on day 7, order at a Mexican taco stand, understand the fast questions the cook asks, and answer without asking them to repeat. We used Memrise's Spanish (Mexico) course and Duolingo's Spanish course, about 15 minutes in each per day.

  1. Day 1. Both apps started with greetings and food. Memrise showed a real man in a market saying Me da dos, por favor. Duolingo taught Quiero dos tacos with tiles.
  2. Day 2. Memrise clip of a woman asking ¿Cuánto le debo? at normal speed. It sounded like one word. We replayed it six times.
  3. Day 3. Duolingo's restaurant unit. Explain My Answer told us why it is me da and not me das with a stranger, which Memrise had not explained.
  4. Day 4. Memrise brought back ¿Para aquí o para llevar? in review, first as audio only. We got it right without reading.
  5. Day 5 and 6. Speaking. Memrise's AI chat played a street vendor in text and voice. Duolingo's Video Call asked what we like to eat, in a clear, slow voice.
  6. Day 7. A friend from Mexico City played the cook and spoke at full speed. We caught ¿Con todo? and ¿Para llevar? straight away. We ordered fine, but answered sí to a question about salsa we had not understood.

Memrise got us further on this goal, because its clips had trained our ears on real speed. Duolingo made the grammar clearer and was easier to open every day. Neither prepared us for the question we did not expect.

What Memrise is like

Memrise today is not the flashcard site many people remember. Each language is one course split into real-life scenarios, like ordering food or meeting a partner's family. You learn words and phrases, watch short clips of native speakers using them, then practise speaking with AI Buddies, chatbots that play a role [1]. Words come back on a spaced schedule, so they return just before you forget them.

The videos are the reason to choose it. On day two of our test, during a lunch break, we watched a woman in a Mexico City market say ¿Cuánto le debo? so quickly it sounded like one long word. We replayed it on the phone six times, then said it along with her. By the next day, the phrase no longer sounded fast. No textbook recording does that.

The weak spots are grammar and trust. Memrise explains very little, so you pick up phrases without always knowing why they work. In March 2024 it moved its community-made courses off the app, which angered many long-time users, and its Trustpilot score was about 1.7 in early 2026 [3][4]. The free plan limits lessons, videos and conversations, and the AI features are in Pro [1].

What Duolingo is like

Duolingo is a full course made of three to five minute lessons. You match words, fill gaps and repeat sentences, and a path of units takes you forward. The free plan opens every course, with energy and ads as the limit.

Its explanations are better than they were. Explain My Answer, which tells you why you were wrong, is free in the main courses since January 2026 [8]. Video Call, the AI speaking feature, now comes with Super for new subscribers [7].

The honest problem is the voices. On day three, on the morning bus, we did a restaurant lesson where every sentence came in the same calm, clear audio. That evening we played a Memrise clip of the same kind of order, and understood half of it. Duolingo teaches you the language. It does not teach you how fast people speak it. Our full Duolingo review goes into the rest.

Listening and real speech

This is Memrise's clearest win. It uses real people of different ages and accents, in streets and kitchens, not studio voices. Learners who add films and series often pair it with apps that teach through TV shows for the same reason.

Duolingo's audio is clear and consistent, which helps beginners, but it is slow, careful speech.

Speaking practice

Both apps now have AI speaking, and both keep it behind a paid plan. Memrise Pro includes AI Buddies for roleplays, grammar questions and culture. In February 2026 Memrise also added Podchats, voice conversations with an AI podcast host for intermediate and advanced English learners, sold as a separate plan [3].

Duolingo's Video Call puts you on a short call with Lily, who asks questions based on your course. On day six of our test we told her Me gustan los tacos de pastor, and she asked what we put on them. Memrise's buddies let you set the scene, which felt closer to what we needed at the taco stand.

Vocabulary and review

Memrise was built for remembering words, and it still shows. Its review brings words back at the right moment, often as audio only, so you practise hearing them. In 2026 it began bringing community content back as word lists inside the app, after promising in November 2025 not to shut it down [3]. In May 2026 it also brought back Mems, small pictures or notes that help a word stick [3]. If words are your main goal, our guide to the best vocabulary apps compares it with Anki and others.

Duolingo's practice sessions review your mistakes, but you have little say over what comes back.

Prices are US App Store prices checked in September 2026, plus Memrise's standard prices reported in 2026 [1][4][5]. Both apps show changing offers, and prices vary by country, so check your own store before you pay. Both renew on their own after a trial.

Who should pick which

Pick Memrise if you already know some basics, you want to understand native speakers, and your language is one of its main courses.

Pick Duolingo if you are starting from zero, you want something free, you need clear structure, or you mainly need help showing up every day. Many learners do both: Duolingo for the path, Memrise for the ear.

Conclusion

Memrise and Duolingo fix different problems. Memrise trains your ear on real people and keeps your words alive, but it explains little and has lost some trust with its changes. Duolingo gives you a free, clear course and a daily habit, but its voices are slow and its speaking is thin. If you can read but not follow, try Memrise. If you need a reason to open an app at all, start with Duolingo. If neither fits, our list of Duolingo alternatives by goal is the next place to look.

Frequently asked questions

Is Memrise better than Duolingo?

For listening to real native speakers and remembering words, yes. For a free plan, clear structure and a daily habit, Duolingo is stronger. The better one depends on whether you need to understand more or practise more often.

Is Memrise free like Duolingo?

Memrise has a free plan, but it limits lessons, videos and conversations and shows ads. Duolingo's free plan opens every course, with ads and an energy limit.

Did Memrise remove community courses?

In March 2024 Memrise moved community courses to a separate site. In 2026 it started bringing community content back into the app as word lists.

Can I use Memrise and Duolingo together?

Yes. Many learners use Duolingo for structure and grammar and Memrise to hear real speakers. Just check you are not paying for two plans you do not use.
