Praktika Review 2026: Is Praktika Free, and Is It Good?

Praktika gives you lifelike AI avatar tutors at one of the lowest prices in the category. It is great for speaking time, weaker on keeping words, and billing needs care.

Praktika is free to download and free to try, but the free version is limited, and most people who stay end up paying for Premium. The good news is the price: about 10 dollars a month in the US, less on a yearly plan, which is low for an AI tutor you can talk to every day compared with Pingo Pro.

TL;DRPraktika lets you talk out loud with 3D avatar tutors that have names, backstories and accents, in 12 languages, with English the most complete. It is one of the best apps for getting speaking time at a low price. The weak spots are a rigid lesson path, few tools for reviewing words, and many complaints about trials, renewals and support.

Praktika is built for a very common learner: someone who studied English at school, understands a lot, and still freezes when they have to answer. Its answer is a tutor with a face. We used Praktika Premium on iPhone and Android in 2026, mostly for English with some Spanish, and read this year's App Store, Google Play and Trustpilot reviews.

What you get

Praktika feels like a video call with a patient teacher, unlike Speak's guided lessons. You choose an avatar, it greets you by name, and you talk.

  • Avatar tutors. Each one has a name, a backstory and an accent, such as American, British or Latin American. The tutor can also explain things in your native language [1][3].
  • Lessons and topics. More than 1,000 lessons, including IELTS and TOEFL practice, travel, careers and slang, plus free conversation on any topic [1].
  • Feedback you can tune. Corrections on grammar, word choice and pronunciation, set to Soft, Balanced or Strict [3].
  • Uploads. Share a photo, a PDF or a voice note and the tutor builds a conversation around it [1].
  • A study plan. A daily plan that follows your goal, your interests and your pace [3].

On day three we did an English session on the bus home, set to Balanced. We said I am agree with you, and a small note appeared under the transcript suggesting I agree with you, with a one-line explanation. The avatar just nodded and kept talking. It felt like a real chat, and we only saw the fix because we looked down.

How far can you get

Praktika works best for learners between about A2 and B2 on the European CEFR scale: people who know some grammar and words but need practice using them. At that level the avatar calls are a comfortable place to build fluency, and the exam and career topics give you something real to talk about.

Complete beginners can use it, since the tutor can explain in your own language, but it is not a full course that teaches grammar step by step, unlike the course in our Learna review. At the top end, the conversations stay friendly and tend to steer back to the lesson goal, so they may not push you hard enough [6].

Our 7-day test

We set one goal: on day 7, book a doctor's appointment in English over the phone, with a friend playing the receptionist, and no notes. We used Praktika Premium, feedback set to Strict.

  1. Day 1. Asked the tutor to play a clinic receptionist. Learned I'd like to make an appointment and Is there anything available this week? The first call was slow and full of pauses.
  2. Day 2. Described symptoms. We said I have a sore throat since Monday and the tutor stopped us for I've had a sore throat since Monday. We repeated it four times.
  3. Day 3. Uploaded a photo of a clinic's opening hours and asked questions about it. Fun, but it took ten minutes to get back to our goal.
  4. Day 4 and 5. Short calls at lunch. By day five Is there anything earlier? came out without thinking.
  5. Day 6. Tried to review the week's words and found no list to review. Wrote symptoms, referral and walk-in in our own notes.
  6. Day 7. Did the call with a friend. The booking went smoothly. When they asked Are you registered with us? we did not understand and asked them to repeat it twice.

The honest result: after a week we sounded calmer, and the lines we practised came out right. What we missed was anything we had not rehearsed, and we had to build our own word list. Each day took about 15 minutes.

What the free version limits

Praktika is free to download, and the free version lets you start conversations and try lessons. It is limited in how much you can speak each day, and several features are only in Premium: unlimited speaking practice, instant feedback, translation help, all the avatars, the more realistic voices, a tutor that remembers you, and the daily speaking challenges [4].

The paid plan often starts with a trial that needs a payment method. That is where most of the anger in reviews comes from. On Trustpilot, Praktika scores 3.6 out of 5 from about 1,200 reviews, and while 48 percent are five stars, 19 percent are one star, mostly about charges after a trial, trouble cancelling and slow support [5].

The product has limits too. Reviewers say the lesson path is rigid and can reset if you change it, there is no summary at the end of a lesson, and there is no audio-only mode if the avatar distracts you [6]. The biggest gap for us was words: there is no proper review system, so the words from a great call can be gone by the next week.

Prices are US App Store prices checked in September 2026 [1]. Praktika also sells weekly and three-month plans, and the App Store lists many versions of each plan, so the price you see depends on the offer and the country [1][4]. The lowest yearly offers work out at only a few dollars a month.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

Many more languages. Praktika started as an English app. In May 2025 it announced seven new languages, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, German, Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese, on top of English and Spanish [7]. Arabic, Russian and Chinese followed, for 12 in total [1].

Fast growth. At that time Praktika reported more than 14 million downloads, over 2 million monthly users, and 20 times revenue growth in 2024. It also opened a UK hub [7]. Its website now says more than 30 million learners [3].

Who uses it. In the same announcement, Praktika said 60 percent of its users are Gen Z, 28 percent learn for their career and 26 percent are preparing to move or study abroad [7].

Uploads. The app added what it calls Multimodality, so you can bring your own photos, documents, audio or video into a lesson, such as a CV before a job interview [1].

Praktika 4.0. In summer 2026 the app got its biggest redesign so far, with a new look and dark mode [1][2].

What learners are saying

Most people who use Praktika like it. The ratings are 4.7 on the App Store from about 164,000 ratings and 4.6 on Google Play from about 1.3 million reviews [1][2]. Learners praise the avatars for making practice feel like talking to a person, say they speak more than they ever did in class, and like that there is no judgement when they make mistakes.

The complaints are about two things. The first is money: charges at the end of a trial, renewals people did not expect, and difficulty getting refunds from support [5]. The second is quality at the edges: speech recognition that sometimes mishears you, feedback that can feel generic, and conversations that start to repeat [5][6].

Is Praktika worth it?

Praktika is worth it if you already understand some of your language, you freeze when you speak, and you want as much speaking time as possible for little money. For English in particular, the choice of accents, the exam topics and the upload feature make it very good value, a contrast explored in Duolingo versus Praktika.

It is not worth it if you need a real course that teaches grammar step by step, or a strong system for remembering words, which makes Praktika alternatives worth comparing. It is also not the right app if avatars feel strange to you, since there is no voice-only mode.

Tips before you pay

  • Set a reminder when you start a trial. Note the date and cancel from your App Store or Google Play subscriptions at least a day before it ends.
  • Turn feedback to Strict. The Soft setting lets many mistakes pass. Strict makes you repeat until the sentence is right.
  • Keep your own word list. Write down new words after each call, since the app will not bring them back for you.
  • Use uploads for real tasks. A CV, a menu or an email you have to answer makes the conversation about your life, not a script.

Where Slova fits

If you like Praktika's calls but want a course that grows with you, Slova is worth a look. It builds your lessons around why you are learning, whether that is a new job, moving abroad or something you love like anime or football, and every lesson can be done out loud with our AI tutors. The words from everything you do stay in one list that brings them back, so nothing from a good conversation gets lost.

Conclusion

Praktika is not really free, but it is one of the cheapest good AI tutors you can pay for in 2026. The avatars make speaking feel natural, the topics are wide, and it now covers 12 languages. The trade-offs are a rigid path, weak word review, and a billing process that needs care. Use the free version to see if you like the avatars, and if you pay, choose a plan you understand and set a reminder.
