Speak App Review 2026: Is Speak Worth the Price?

Speak is one of the best apps for getting beginners to speak out loud. It is worth it on a yearly plan if speaking is your goal, and less so once you pass intermediate.

Speak is worth it if you are a beginner or early intermediate learner and your main goal is to speak, and you pay yearly. At about 84 dollars a year it is one of the best speaking courses on a phone. At 18 dollars a month, or 40 for Premium Plus, it is harder to justify, and it gets repetitive once you are past intermediate.

TL;DRSpeak teaches Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Chinese and English with short lessons you do out loud, then AI roleplays and free talk. There is no free plan, only a 7-day trial. Premium costs about 18 dollars a month or 84 a year in the US. It is polished and good for shy beginners, and weaker on detailed feedback and on variety at higher levels.

Speak first launched in South Korea as an app for adults who studied English for years at school and still could not say much. It has since grown into one of the biggest AI speaking apps in the world. We used Speak Premium in 2026 for Spanish and Japanese, tried Premium Plus, and read this year's store and Reddit reviews to answer one question: is it worth the money?

What you get

Speak is a speaking course. Almost everything you do, you do out loud.

  • Structured lessons. Short units from beginner to advanced. Each lesson teaches a few phrases, has you repeat them, and then asks you to use them [3].
  • AI roleplays. Audio scenes where you order food, check in, or talk to a coworker, and the AI answers what you actually say.
  • Free talk and Ask Speak Tutor. Open conversation on any topic, plus a tutor you can ask about grammar or a word.
  • Pronunciation feedback. The app scores how you said a sentence and marks the parts to fix.
  • Premium Plus extras. Unlimited "Made for You" lessons built from your mistakes, and a personal study plan [8].

A lesson is short. First a teacher on video shows you a phrase, then you say it several times, then you use it in a short scene with the AI. Speak calls this Learn, Practice, Apply [3].

On day five of our Spanish course we did a restaurant roleplay on the sofa after dinner. We asked ¿Me puede recomendar un plato? and the waiter suggested the fish. When we said Quiero el pescado, por favor too quietly, the app asked us to try again, then moved on. It felt like a real exchange, not a quiz.

How far can you get

Speak is strongest from zero to around intermediate, roughly A1 to B1 on the European CEFR scale. In that range the course is well paced, unlike Praktika's freer avatar calls, and you will be able to handle travel, small talk, work introductions and simple opinions out loud. The English course is the deepest, since Speak began as an English app, and Spanish is a close second.

After that, reviewers say progress slows. Higher-level lessons feel repetitive, the roleplays do not get much harder, and there is little variety in voices and accents [4].

Our 7-day test

We set one goal: on day 7, check in to a hotel in Japanese and ask two questions, out loud, without reading. We used Speak Premium on a phone and started from near zero.

  1. Day 1. First Japanese lessons. Learned Konnichiwa and Yoyaku o shite imasu (I have a reservation). The repeat-after-me rhythm felt slow but calm.
  2. Day 2. Travel phrases. Chekkuin o onegaishimasu took about six tries before the app accepted it. We did it on the train, whispering, which did not help.
  3. Day 3. A roleplay at a front desk. The AI asked for our name and we froze. Tapping the hint showed the answer, which got us through.
  4. Day 4 and 5. Asked Speak Tutor why it is wa in Chōshoku wa nanji kara desu ka? (What time does breakfast start?). The answer was short and clear.
  5. Day 6. Practised Nimotsu o azukatte moraemasu ka? (Can you keep my luggage?). This came from our own notes, since the course had not reached it yet.
  6. Day 7. Did the scene with a friend playing the clerk. Check-in and breakfast went well. The luggage question came out in pieces, with a long pause in the middle.

For a total beginner, a week with Speak got the basic scene working, and we could say the core lines with a decent accent. The gap was anything outside the lesson plan. Each day took about 15 minutes, a bit more on roleplay days.

What Speak limits

Speak has no free plan. You get a 7-day free trial with full access, but you have to add a payment method first, and you must cancel at least a day before it ends to avoid a charge [6]. After the trial, nothing meaningful is free.

The second limit is the split between plans. Premium gives you the full course, roleplays and free talk. The personal parts, "Made for You" lessons built from your own mistakes and a study plan, sit in Premium Plus at more than double the price. Premium gets up to three Made for You lessons a day [1][8].

The third limit is feedback. Speak tells you when a sentence was wrong and shows a better one, but it rarely explains why in depth. Some learners also find the speech recognition lenient, unlike ELSA's sound-by-sound scoring, so a sentence that was close enough can pass. And although it added quick vocabulary reviews in late 2025, there is still no full spaced repetition system for the words you meet [3][4].

What changed in 2025 and 2026

A billion-dollar company. Speak raised 78 million dollars in December 2024 at a valuation of about 1 billion dollars, with backing from the OpenAI Startup Fund, Khosla Ventures and Accel [7].

100 million dollars in revenue. In November 2025, Forbes reported that Speak had passed 100 million dollars in yearly revenue and about 15 million downloads, with around 500 companies using its workplace plans [5].

A big winter release. In December 2025 Speak rebuilt its lessons. It added adaptive lessons, voice-first lessons, short vocabulary reviews, unit refreshers for people coming back after a break, audio-first roleplays that feel less scripted, and streak freezes and repairs [3].

Speak Level. The same release added a way to measure your speaking level. It started with English learners in Korea, Japan and Taiwan, with a wider rollout planned for 2026 [3].

Steady updates in 2026. The latest versions, in September 2026, focus on these adaptive lessons, clearer progress and faster, more natural roleplay responses [1].

What learners are saying

Speak has some of the highest ratings in the category: 4.8 on the App Store from about 62,000 ratings and 4.7 on Google Play from about 123,000 [1][2]. The praise is consistent. Learners say it finally got them to speak, that the lessons are well made, and that the voices sound natural.

The complaints fall into three groups. The first is price: many people love the app but say 18 dollars a month is a lot, especially outside the US, and that the Premium and Premium Plus split is unclear. The second is depth: learners at intermediate and above say the lessons start to repeat and the roleplays stay easy [4]. The third is billing, with some store reviews describing surprise renewals after the trial.

On Reddit, the common view is that Speak is one of the best places to start speaking, and not the place to finish, which makes Speak alternatives relevant later.

Is Speak worth it?

Speak is worth it if you are a beginner or early intermediate learner, you want to speak more than you want to read, and you choose the yearly plan. It is structured, friendly and well made, and it gets you talking from the first lesson.

It is not worth it if you are already comfortable holding a conversation and want challenge, detailed grammar feedback or many different accents. It is also hard to justify on a monthly plan, or in Premium Plus, unless the personal lessons are the exact thing you need, especially when weighing Loora versus Speak.

Tips for getting the most from Speak

  • Use the trial on your real goal. Try the course level and roleplays you would actually use, not just the first lessons.
  • Speak at full volume. The app scores quiet or whispered sentences badly. Find a place where you can talk normally.
  • Keep your own word list. Write down new words from roleplays and free talk, since the app does not keep them all for review.
  • Pick yearly Premium first. Try Premium Plus only if you run out of course and want lessons built from your mistakes.

Where Slova fits

If you like speaking out loud but want lessons that fit your life, Slova is worth a look. It builds your path around why you are learning, whether that is a job, a move abroad or something you love like anime or football, and every lesson can be done out loud with our AI tutors. The words from everything you do land in one list that keeps them, so you do not have to write them down yourself.

Conclusion

Speak is one of the best speaking apps you can buy in 2026, as long as you are early in your learning and you pay yearly. The lessons are polished, the roleplays are good, and the company keeps improving the app. The limits are price, the Premium Plus split, short feedback, and repetition at higher levels. Start with the trial, and if you are speaking more after a week, it is money well spent.
