Busuu vs Duolingo (2026): Which Teaches You More?

Busuu is the better teacher, Duolingo is the better habit. Here is how they compare on lessons, grammar, speaking, feedback and price in 2026.

Pick Busuu if you want a structured course that explains grammar and lets native speakers correct what you write and say. Pick Duolingo if you want a free, fun daily habit in almost any language.

TL;DRBusuu is stronger at explaining, levels and human feedback, and weaker at motivation and language choice. Duolingo is stronger at habit, variety and its free plan, and weaker at explaining why. Busuu Premium runs about 7 to 10 dollars a month, Duolingo Super about 10 to 13. Choose by what you lack: understanding, or showing up.

Most people who search this have done some Duolingo. They like the streak but feel they are guessing more than learning, and Busuu is usually the first serious app that comes up.

We used both apps side by side, on their paid plans, and looked at what decides whether you will actually use the language: how well the rules are explained, how much you speak and write, and whether you keep going.

The short answer

Busuu

You want to understand the grammar and get real corrections

CEFR levels, clear explanations and native speakers who check your work. Fewer languages, less fun.

Duolingo

You want a daily habit and a free way to start

Short games, streaks and 40+ languages. Explains less, and speaking is an extra.

How they score

We scored each app out of 10 on the things that matter once the first month is over. Busuu wins on explanations, feedback and clear levels. Duolingo wins on habit, language choice and the free plan.

How we tested

We used Busuu Premium Plus and Duolingo Super on iPhone, Android and the web over several weeks in 2026, and did the same things in both: the first lesson, a week of daily sessions in Spanish, and the writing and speaking tasks each app offers.

We also read recent App Store and Google Play reviews and checked each app's plans and prices in September 2026 [1][4]. Prices change by country, so treat the numbers below as a guide.

Our 7-day test

Our goal: on day 7, talk for one minute in Spanish about last weekend, using the past tense, without notes. We did the same Spanish A1 to A2 material in both apps, about 15 minutes in each per day.

  1. Day 1. Placement in both. Busuu put us in A2 after a short test, Duolingo let us jump ahead a few units. Both felt about right.
  2. Day 2. Past tense. Busuu showed a short grammar tip on fui and hice before the drills. Duolingo taught the same forms by trial and error.
  3. Day 3. Busuu asked us to write three sentences about our weekend. We sent El fin de semana pasado fuí a la playa con mis amigos to the community.
  4. Day 4. A native speaker had corrected it overnight: no accent on fui, plus a friendlier way to say it. Duolingo had nothing like this.
  5. Day 5 and 6. Speaking. Busuu's AI Conversation asked about our weekend and gave feedback. Duolingo's Video Call asked similar questions but kept them shorter.
  6. Day 7. One minute out loud, no notes. The Busuu sentences came out more complete. Duolingo's daily streak kept us more regular, but we still paused on compré and vimos.

Busuu got us further on this goal, mainly because someone told us why and a real person checked our writing. Duolingo was easier to open every day. Neither made one minute of talking feel easy yet.

What Busuu is like

Busuu is a course app that feels closer to a textbook, in a good way, like Babbel's grammar-first course. Lessons follow the European CEFR levels, from A1 up to B2 in most languages, and a bit further in the biggest ones. Each lesson mixes vocabulary, a short dialogue, a grammar tip and a writing or speaking task. A Study Plan tells you how much to do each day to reach a level by a date you choose.

The part people remember is the community. You send a written or spoken answer, and native speakers who also learn on Busuu correct it. On a lunch break in our test week we recorded Normalmente ceno a las nueve for a speaking task. That evening two people had replied, one with a note that our ceno sounded like seno. It felt like a pen pal who is also a teacher.

The weak spots are motivation and range. Busuu has 14 languages, the smaller courses are thinner, and while Busuu's plan page now lists complete courses on the free plan, most of the extras that make it useful, like AI Conversations and offline lessons, sit in the paid plans [7]. AI Conversations sit in the higher Premium Plus plan and work only in the mobile apps, not on the web.

What Duolingo is like

Duolingo is the app most people start with. Lessons take three to five minutes. You match words, fill gaps and repeat short sentences, and streaks, leagues and the owl make it easy to come back tomorrow.

The free plan is generous: every course, with energy and ads as the limit. Explain My Answer, which tells you why you were wrong, became free in the main courses in January 2026. Super removes the energy limit, and in 2026 it is also getting Video Call, the AI speaking feature that used to be only in Max [6].

The honest problem is that Duolingo teaches by guessing. On day two of our test, on the morning bus, we got hice right five times without knowing it was the past of hacer. The streak said we were doing well. When we tried to use it in our own sentence that evening, we realised we had been matching patterns, not learning a rule.

Lessons and grammar

This is Busuu's clearest win. It tells you the rule, shows it in a dialogue, then makes you use it. You always know which CEFR level you are at, and you can get a certificate when you finish one.

Duolingo's course is longer in popular languages like Spanish and French, and easy to follow. But it explains little up front, so if you like to understand why, it can feel like a puzzle with the instructions missing.

Speaking and feedback

Neither app is a speaking app first, but Busuu gives you more real feedback. The community corrects your spoken and written answers, and Premium Plus adds AI Conversations with instant tips [8]. The human corrections are uneven, since some helpers are more careful than others, but they catch things no algorithm does.

Duolingo's speaking has improved in 2026. Video Call with Lily is moving into Super, and in February the company said it wants learners to answer most exercises with their voice. The calls are fun and short, and they stay close to what the course taught.

Habit and review

Duolingo is the best habit builder in language learning. In our test week we never missed a Duolingo day, and missed one Busuu day.

Busuu is quieter but has stronger review. Its Smart Review saves the words and grammar from your lessons and brings them back, and you can study them offline on Premium. Duolingo's practice sessions do some of this, but you have less control over what comes back.

Who should pick which

Pick Busuu if you learn one of its 14 languages, you like to understand the grammar, and you want someone to check your writing and speaking. It suits learners working toward a level, for study or work.

Pick Duolingo if you are starting from zero, you want something free, your language is not on Busuu, or you mainly need help showing up every day.

Conclusion

Busuu and Duolingo solve different problems. Busuu explains more, gives you clear levels and puts real people between you and your mistakes. Duolingo makes learning a daily game and costs nothing to start. If you have a streak but feel you are guessing, try Busuu. If you need a reason to open a language app at all, start with Duolingo.

Frequently asked questions

Is Busuu better than Duolingo?

For grammar, clear levels and real feedback, yes. For habit, a free plan and language choice, Duolingo is stronger. The better one depends on whether you need to understand more or practise more often.

Is Busuu free like Duolingo?

Busuu has a free plan that now includes complete courses, but most extras, like AI Conversations and offline lessons, are paid. Duolingo's free plan gives you every course and lesson, with ads and an energy limit.

Can Busuu get you to fluency?

Busuu courses go up to about B2 in most languages, which is a solid independent level. Fluency still needs a lot of real conversation beyond any app.

Can I use Busuu and Duolingo together?

Yes. Many learners do a short Duolingo lesson for the streak and a Busuu lesson for grammar and corrections. Just check you are not paying for two plans you do not use.
