How IELTS rounds your overall band
Your overall band is the average of your four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average that ends in .25 goes up to the next half band. One that ends in .75 goes up to the next whole band.

Questions about IELTS scores
Rounding, raw marks, CEFR levels and what the calculator can and cannot tell you.
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Add your four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.125 becomes 6.0.
What band is 30 out of 40 in IELTS?
30 correct answers out of 40 is about band 7.0 in Listening and in Academic Reading. In General Training Reading, 30 out of 40 is about band 6.0, because that paper needs more correct answers for the same band.
What band is 35 out of 40 in IELTS?
35 correct answers out of 40 is about band 8.0 in Listening and in Academic Reading. In General Training Reading, 35 is the mark IELTS publishes for band 7.0, and most conversion tables give 7.0 for 34 as well.
Why does General Training Reading need more marks for the same band?
The General Training reading texts are easier than the Academic ones, so IELTS asks for more correct answers to reach the same band. For band 6, Academic Reading needs about 23 out of 40, while General Training needs about 30.
Is this calculator's result my official IELTS score?
No. It uses the average marks IELTS publishes for each band, and the exact marks change slightly from one test version to another. Use it to estimate a practice test result. Your official score comes only on your Test Report Form.
Which CEFR level is my IELTS band?
IELTS maps bands to the CEFR like this: 8.5 to 9 is C2, 7.0 to 8.0 is C1, 5.5 to 6.5 is B2 and 4.0 to 5.0 is B1. Below 4.0 is A2 or lower.
I do not have a Speaking band yet. How can I estimate one?
Take a full speaking mock test with a timer and get feedback on it. The free Slova IELTS speaking mock asks Parts 1, 2 and 3 out loud and shows practice indicators for fluency, vocabulary and grammar, with a rough estimate when you speak long enough. It is not an official band, so treat the result as a guide.
How are Writing and Speaking bands worked out?
Examiners mark them against four criteria each. Writing uses Task Achievement or Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Speaking uses Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Enter the band you got or expect for each.
