    Is bruschetta broo-SKET-uh or broo-SHET-uh?

In Italian, the letters sch before e or i make the sound sk. So the Italian word is broo-SKET-ta, and English follows it: broo-SKET-uh. The form broo-SHET-uh is very common, but it is not what the dictionaries list.

The word comes from the Italian verb bruscare, to toast. A bruschetta is a toasted slice of bread, and the topping came later.

The same idea explains Chianti, said kee-AN-tee: in Italian, ch before i or e is also a k sound. Say the k clearly, and put the weight on the second syllable.
