    Describe what people wear

Look at the people around you on the bus and say it in English: a man in a grey coat, a girl with a red backpack. Real people give you real examples.

  2. 2

Learn the verb with the noun

In English you wear a coat, put on a coat and take off a coat. The last group has these verbs, and each has its own example.

  3. 3

    Watch for plural-only words

Jeans, trousers, shorts, glasses and gloves are always plural, because they come in two parts. You say these jeans, a pair of jeans, never a jean.

Clothes vocabulary FAQ

What are the names of clothes in English?

Everyday clothes include T-shirt, shirt, jeans, trousers, shorts, skirt, dress, sweater, hoodie, socks and underwear. For cold weather you add a jacket, coat, scarf, gloves and hat. You can hear all of them above, with examples.

What is the difference between wear, put on and try on?

Wear means to have clothes on your body: she wears a red coat. Put on is the action of getting dressed: put on your shoes. Try on means to put clothes on in a shop to see if they fit: can I try on this jacket?

Why do we say a pair of jeans?

Jeans, trousers, shorts, glasses and gloves are made of two matching parts, so English treats them as plural and counts them with pair. You say two pairs of jeans, never two jeans.

What is the difference between trousers and pants?

In British English trousers are the clothes for your legs and pants are underwear. In American English pants are the clothes for your legs, and underwear is the word for what you wear under them.

What is the difference between trainers and sneakers?

They are the same shoes. Trainers is the British word and sneakers is the American word. The cards show both.
