Start at A1
Everyday words and simple sentences, fully vowelled, with a transliteration under each line; switch it off if you read Arabic script.
Step up to C1
Vocabulary, grammar, word order and short texts, one level up every five questions, unvowelled from B1 as adult texts are. Several misses in a row and the next questions come from an easier level.
See your level
Your estimated level, A1 to C2, a score for vocabulary, grammar and reading, and the lesson to start at in Slova.
How we estimate your level
Every question is in Modern Standard Arabic (الفصحى), the Arabic of books, news and exams, and written at one level: a word gap, the closest meaning or the right reply, a grammar gap, Arabic word order with the ★ piece, and a short text like the notices, messages and articles of Arabic courses for non-native speakers. A level counts as passed when you get three of its questions right, and your result is the highest level you passed, counting up from A1. A short test cannot tell C1 from C2, so C2 shows as your next goal. The questions are original and not calibrated on large groups of learners, so the result is an estimate on the CEFR scale, not an official certificate.

Every A1 and A2 question is fully vowelled, as beginner books print it, with a transliteration line (al-miftāḥ) you can switch off.

Arabic reading test: short texts from A1 to C1
One question in five is a short text: a message, a notice, an e-mail or a news item, with one question about it.
The texts grow with the level: a short vowelled note at A1, notices and e-mails at A2 and B1, news items and opinion pieces at B2 and C1, unvowelled from B1 as real texts are. The question is in Arabic too, so it checks that you understood the text, not only the words. This is a reading-comprehension test in Modern Standard Arabic; it does not test reading the Quran aloud or tajwīd.
Two reading examples from this test, at A1 and B1:
Example 1 · A1 · Read the text, then answer the question.

Arabic grammar test: what each level checks

- A1: the nominal sentence, هذا and هذه, gender, the article, attached pronouns, the past and present of common verbs, numbers 3 to 10 with their noun.
- A2: the dual (كتابين), sound and broken plurals, لن and لم with their moods, كان with its predicate, comparatives (أسرع من).
- B1: إنّ and كان with case endings, المضارع المنصوب after لكي, the jussive after لا الناهية, relative اللاتي and الذي, numbers with the counted noun, the verbal noun.
- B2: the passive (وُضِعَ), the five nouns (أخاك), participles (مزوَّد), لو conditionals, verbs with their preposition (اعتذر عن).
- C1: المفعول المطلق and الحال, formal connectors (بيد أنّ، فضلًا عن، لا سيّما، شريطة أن).

Arabic placement test: where to start in Slova
Your result also places you in Slova’s spoken Arabic course of 400 lessons. The course teaches the everyday Arabic of the Gulf, so we place you carefully.
Slova is a speaking course: you learn by talking, with an AI tutor, from the first lesson. It teaches the spoken Arabic of Gulf cities such as Riyadh, Dubai and Doha, which shares most words with Modern Standard Arabic but differs in everyday verbs, negation and pronunciation. So a good score here does not mean you already speak Gulf Arabic, and we start you lower than your reading level.
| Your result | Start at |
|---|---|
| Below A1 | Lesson 1 · Greeting, replying, and introducing yourself |
| A1 | Lesson 29 · Door codes, morning habits, and today’s weather |
| A2 | Lesson 65 · Asking friends what they are doing and talking about others |
| B1 | Lesson 101 · Compound numbers, age, and being on time |
| B2 | Lesson 151 · Sending locations and talking about what you liked |
| C1 and up | Lesson 201 · Real conditionals with «إِذا» for everyday plans |

Is this test in Modern Standard Arabic or a dialect?
Modern Standard Arabic (الفصحى), the Arabic of books, news, signs and exams across the Arab world. Slova’s speaking course teaches Gulf Arabic, the everyday spoken Arabic of Riyadh, Dubai and Doha. The two share most of their words, but a learner who reads MSA well still has new verbs, negation and sounds to learn in speech, which is why we place you a little lower in the course.
