How does the Hindi level test work?

25 short questions, a little harder every five, from A1 up to C1. No timer, no sign-up to start, and one tap answers each question.

  1. Start at A1

Everyday words, simple sentences and short notes. A romanized line under each question helps you read Devanagari; switch it off if you don’t need it.

  2. Step up to C1

Vocabulary, grammar, word order and short texts, one level up every five questions. Several misses in a row and the next questions come from an easier level.

  3. See your level

Your estimated level, A1 to C2, a score for vocabulary, grammar and reading, and the lesson to start at in Slova.

How we estimate your level

Every question is written at one level: a word gap, the closest meaning or the right reply, a grammar gap, Hindi word order with the ★ piece, and a short text like the notices, messages and articles of Hindi courses. The questions follow what university Hindi placement tests and courses expect at each level. A level counts as passed when you get three of its questions right, and your result is the highest level you passed, counting up from A1. A short test cannot tell C1 from C2, so C2 shows as your next goal. The questions are original and not calibrated on large groups of learners, so the result is an estimate on the CEFR scale, not an official certificate.

Hindi A1 test: what a beginner is asked

The first five questions of this test are at A1. Get three of them right and you have the first level.

At A1 you read Devanagari slowly, know the words of daily life (family, food, the market, time) and build simple sentences: मेरा नाम … है, किताब मेज़ पर है, मैं चाय पीता हूँ. The romanized line under each A1 and A2 question shows how the Devanagari reads (kitaab, chaay), so a learner who speaks some Hindi but reads little can still take the test.

How good is my Hindi?

Take this test: 25 questions from A1 to C1 give you an estimated CEFR level, a score for vocabulary, grammar and reading, and every answer explained, in about 10 minutes.

What are the levels of the Hindi language?

Hindi is described in the six CEFR levels: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), C1 and C2 (proficient user). Universities and employers name their requirements in these levels.

What is A1 level Hindi?

A1 is the first level. You read Devanagari slowly, understand everyday words and simple sentences, introduce yourself and ask simple questions. The first five questions of this test are at A1.

Is this a Hindi proficiency test?

It is a short level test that estimates your proficiency from vocabulary, grammar and reading, A1 to C2. A full proficiency exam also tests listening, writing and speaking; this test does not.

Is there an official Hindi language exam?

There is no single international Hindi exam for learners, as there is for Japanese or Spanish. Universities set their own placement tests, government bodies run their own (for example the US Defense Language Proficiency Test for its staff), and some employers use commercial CEFR-based tests. Ask the institution that wants a result which test it accepts.

Does this Hindi test have listening or speaking?

No. It has vocabulary, grammar, word order and reading questions only. Slova’s course itself is spoken, so you practise listening and speaking there.

Do I need to read Devanagari?

It helps. The A1 and A2 questions show a romanized line under the Hindi, which you can switch off; from B1 up, reading Devanagari is part of the level.

Is the Hindi level test free?

Yes. All 25 questions, your level, the section scores and the explanations are free. We ask for your email at the end to show the result and send you a copy.

Is the result an official certificate?

No. This is a practice and level test made by Slova, and its result is an estimate on the CEFR scale. Use it to choose a course level or to see your progress.
